The 3 Most Popular Types of Plastic Surgery for Men

Eyelid Surgery

April 24, 2019

It’s not uncommon for physical insecurities to arise for men just like they do for the ladies, whether age has brought about a double chin or extra weight has you self-conscious of your love handles. Women shouldn’t be the only ones openly talking about their trouble spots. Cosmetic procedures can be valuable for men as well, and are only growing in popularity with time.

You may be asking, do men really get plastic surgery? The answer is yes. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures performed on men has increased by 28% since 2000. Though there are a plethora of surgical procedures men are turning to, the three top plastic surgery categories at the Centre For Plastic Surgery for men are facial surgeries, male breast reduction, and liposuction.

Facial Fixes for Men

Many men are turning to facial surgical procedures to help get the look they want. Some choose to fix certain bothersome features like their nose, whether they were born with it or need help repairing it after an injury. Rhinoplasty, otherwise known as a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose, and has been one of the most popular plastic surgeries among the guys for some time.

The “older and wiser” men may turn to an eyelid lift (Blepharoplasty) to remove or reposition the skin around the eye, resulting in a more alert and youthful look. They may kick it up a notch and undergo a full face lift, technically known as a rhytidectomy. This procedure lifts sagging skin, tightens facial muscles and reduces the effects of time and gravity, often taking years off of the face.

Breast Reductions for Men

“Man boobs,” a condition medically referred to as gynecomastia, affects an estimated 40-60% of men. Some guys could spend every waking minute in the gym and still struggle to tone their chest. . Because of this, more men are undergoing male breast reduction surgery, making it the third most popular plastic surgery procedure for men.

This procedure removes fat and or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in more extreme cases, the excess skin as well. If extra glandular tissue is the main problem, our surgeons will remove the tissue with a scalpel, typically working through an incision either around the nipple area or under the arm. If extra fatty tissue is the culprit, it is often removed by undergoing liposuction. This also begins with a small incision around the nipple area, and then the surgeon will use a slim, hollow tube called a cannula to break up and suction out the fatty tissue. It is quite common for a male breast reduction to involve the removal of excess glandular tissue, as well as liposuction, resulting in a tighter-looking chest.

Liposuction for Men

Extra weight around your middle...you may call it your spare tire, love handles or perhaps the dreaded beer belly. Whether it’s age or simply a trouble spot that won’t go away, extra fat typically isn’t something you’re fond of. Interestingly enough, that “spare tire” can actually be due to hormonal changes that cause this area to become very dense and resistant to diet and exercise. Many guys are turning to liposuction to win this battle, making it the number one plastic surgery procedure among men according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. As we discussed earlier, during a liposuction procedure, the surgeon will make a small incision and then insert the cannula tube. Our surgeons skillfully guide the cannula tube and suctions the fat from the designated areas, while shaping and contouring the body. This procedure is an outpatient surgery, usually performed under a local sedation anesthesia. Typically, patients are back to work in 3 to 5 days and back in the gym four to six weeks after surgery.
