Choosing the Optimal Breast Implant Size

Choosing the Optimal Breast Implant size:

If you are considering Breast Augmentation, one of the most important questions is ”What is the best size for me?” You probably have an idea of the size that you would like for your breasts to be, but you won’t know exactly what implant size fits your body. The optimal size implant for you or any patient can vary significantly. Surgeons that use shaped implants will often adhere to a bio-dimensional approach when determining the optimal size implant. This technique takes into account multiple measurements (breast width, inframammary fold to nipple distance, “pinch test” to check elasticity of the breast skin, height, weight, etc.). Surgeons that use smooth, round implants may use some of these measurements as well to guide their decision regarding implant size. However, they may not adhere to these criteria as rigidly.

Your input is also needed to determine what size is optimal for you. Many patients do not want large implants/breasts and others do. Communicating with your surgeon what size you would like to be after your surgery is obviously very important. Printing before and after pictures of other patients with similar body characteristics (height, weight, breast size and shape) and discussing them with your surgeon will help to convey what you envision. These types of photos can be found on these websites (breastimplantsbymentor.com, implantinfo.com)

Trying on silicone sizers is another great way to get a more realistic idea of what you will look like after surgery. We offer a breast implant sizing and shaping session with our Patient Care Coordinators where you will have the opportunity to “try on” various sizes and shapes of silicone and saline breast implants. You can then see how you would look with each of the implants that you try on to help you determine the size, shape, and profile that will give you the look that you want.

Open communication between the patient and your surgeon is the key to this process and will more than likely result in the optimal implant and desired outcome.
