Liposuction: Tumescent & Ultrasonic

Liposuction is a procedure in which a surgeon removes targeted areas of fat using a device consisting of a thin metal tube (a cannula) and a suction device.

Liposuction is primarily used to eliminate stubborn areas of fat that have been resistant to diet and exercise, and areas of fat that have accumulated simply due to the aging process. Specifically, many people will develop pockets of fat around the abdomen, hips, legs, and neck, as we age and get “fat shifting.” Genetics can be a component as well.

During liposuction, the surgeon targets very specific areas of fat for removal, sculpting and contouring the patient’s body to achieve more youthful looking, aesthetically pleasing proportions.*

There are two primary liposuction techniques in use today: Tumescent and Ultrasonic.

Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is a procedure in which a solution of a dilute anesthetic is injected into the area of fat to be removed, allowing the surgeon to effectively target the area to be treated.*

Ultrasonic - Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction

Ultrasonic liposuction is a procedure in which the surgeon targets the fat to be removed using a specialized cannula that emits ultrasonic energy. Ultrasonic liposuction is especially useful when targeting areas of fibrous fat, which can be difficult to remove otherwise. This type of fat is most common in areas such as the back and, for men, the chest.
