With so much information out there about facelifts and facelift alternatives, it can be challenging to separate fact from fiction. To demystify this procedure, we are providing answers to commonly asked questions.

What does a facelift surgery do?

A facelift can counteract the effects of time and restore the naturally vibrant appearance you remember from years ago. The procedure can even address the early signs of aging before they take hold. A facelift is the rejuvenation of the neck and lower face by the repositioning of the skin and fat grafting. The results of a facelift can last up to ten years.

Recovery typically takes 10 to 14 days, and people can expect some swelling and bruising while incisions heal. Patients are provided with detailed post-surgical care instructions from their surgeon and pain relief recommendations to speed healing.

Will non-surgical options give you results?

It depends on what your desired results are! Non-surgical options work well as a preventative measure; however, they are not as effective for long term results. If you have signs of aging and sagging, you will not get results from non-surgical options. Additionally, you will likely need to get them done consistently to maintain your desired results.

What are the results of a liquid facelift?

Also known as a “lunchtime facelift,” this procedure can only improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles by correcting facial volume. Technically, a liquid facelift is a misuse of the word facelift since it does not prevent aging and sagging of skin. Fillers cannot lift the skin. The results of dermal fillers can last anywhere from 6 months to two years. For patients who have prominent signs of aging, this is not a reasonable option.

What exactly is a “mini facelift” or “mid-facelift”?

A MACS (Minimal Access Cranial Suspension) lift is a type of mini surgical lift that targets the underlying muscle and is suitable for someone with minimal facial sagging and good skin tone. However, it is rare that someone only needs this procedure to gain their desired results.

How do I know if I would benefit from a surgical facelift?

If you have jowls, significant lower face wrinkles, and poor jawline definition, you could be ready for a facelift. A good test you can do at home is to set your hands along the sides of your jaw and pull gently toward your ears. If the results seem desirable, you could be a good candidate for this surgery. Another physical sign that you’re ready for a facelift includes sagging neck tissue.

It is essential that you are in good physical and mental health before a facelift. A facelift is major surgery, and if you have notable health issues, you may not be ready for this procedure. You should see a board-certified plastic surgeon for a consultation.

When should you start using preventative measures?

Now! Simple ways to keep your skin healthy include avoiding sun exposure and smoking. The best topical solutions are exfoliation, sun protection, antioxidants, microneedling, and retinol.

How do I choose the best surgeon for my procedure?

At the very minimum, the surgeon should be board certified. Usually, a board certified plastic surgeon has been in practice longer and will have more experience. You need to feel comfortable with your cosmetic surgeon and their support team. Choose a cosmetic surgeon whom you like and trust completely with your safety and results. You can also ask to view before and after photos of patients with a similar shape and structure to you. This can help you determine whether their results reflect how you want to look after surgery.
