Quick answer: A good candidate for liposuction is a healthy, non-smoking adult at a stable weight, generally within about 30% of their ideal weight, with firm, elastic skin and pockets of fat that haven’t responded to diet and exercise. Liposuction reshapes specific areas. It is not a weight-loss treatment.
Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed procedures at the Centre for Plastic Surgery in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where our surgeons have been contouring bodies since 1983. The question we hear most at consultations isn’t “How does it work?” but “Am I a good candidate?” This checklist is the same one our board-certified plastic surgeons use to answer it.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Liposuction? A Surgeon-Reviewed Checklist
The Seven Signs You’re a Good Candidate for Liposuction
You’re at or near a healthy, stable weight
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) describes ideal candidates as adults within 30% of their ideal weight. Just as important is stability: your weight should have held steady for at least [6 months] before surgery. If you’re still actively losing weight, finish that first so your results reflect your long-term shape.
You have stubborn fat in specific areas
Liposuction works best on localized fat that resists diet and exercise, such as the abdomen, flanks (love handles), hips, thighs, upper arms, back, chest and under the chin. Our surgeons use tumescent liposuction and ultrasonic liposuction, which is especially effective on dense, fibrous fat in the back and male chest.
The fat is under the skin, not around your organs
Liposuction removes subcutaneous fat, the soft fat you can pinch that sits on top of the muscle. It can’t reach visceral fat, the firm fat packed around internal organs beneath the abdominal wall. If your abdomen feels firm and full rather than soft, that’s a key question to raise at your consultation.
Your skin has good elasticity
Firm, elastic skin shrinks back smoothly once fat is removed. If you have loose or crepey skin from pregnancy, major weight loss or aging, liposuction alone may leave sagging. A tummy tuck, arm lift or thigh lift, often combined with liposuction, may be a better fit.
You’re in good overall health
Good candidates have no serious illness or medical condition that could slow healing. During your consultation we review your full medical history, medications and supplements to make sure surgery is safe for you.
You don’t smoke or vape, or you’re willing to stop
Nicotine narrows blood vessels and raises the risk of infection and poor wound healing. You’ll need to stop smoking, vaping and all nicotine products at least six weeks before surgery and stay nicotine-free throughout recovery.
You have realistic goals and a plan to keep your results
Liposuction improves shape and proportion. It won’t remove cellulite, tighten loose skin or produce a dramatic drop on the scale. The fat cells removed don’t grow back, but remaining fat cells can still expand if you gain weight, so a steady diet and exercise routine protects your investment.
Who is NOT a good candidate for liposuction?
Liposuction is usually not recommended if you:
- Want to lose a significant amount of weight, or are more than about 30% above your ideal weight
- Have recently lost a lot of weight and have mostly loose skin, not fat
- Smoke or vape and aren’t willing to stop
- Have a condition that affects healing or clotting, such as uncontrolled diabetes, heart disease or a bleeding disorder
- Are pregnant, or plan a pregnancy soon
- Mainly want to treat cellulite or stretch marks
- Hope surgery will change how others see you, rather than how you feel about yourself
Not being a candidate today doesn’t mean never. Many patients return after reaching a stable weight or pair liposuction with a skin-tightening procedure.
What Recovery Looks Like
Knowing what recovery involves helps you decide whether the timing is right:
- Day of surgery: Most procedures are performed in our accredited, on-site surgical facility. Plan for someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours.
- First week: Soreness and swelling are normal; most patients return to desk work within about a week.
- Weeks 1–6: You’ll wear a compression garment continuously, except to shower, for at least six weeks.
- Months 4–6: Swelling fades and most patients see their most noticeable results.

Frequently Asked Qestions
Is there a BMI limit for liposuction?
There’s no single universal cutoff. Many plastic surgeons follow the ASPS guideline of being within about 30% of your ideal weight; for some people that corresponds to a BMI of roughly [30 or lower]. Your surgeon will look at your overall health and fat distribution, not BMI alone.
How much fat can liposuction remove?
The safe amount depends on your size, health and the number of areas treated. Your surgeon sets the limit during planning. Liposuction is meant to reshape, so most patients see the change in how clothes fit rather than on the scale.
Can liposuction get rid of belly fat?
It can remove the soft fat between the skin and abdominal muscles. It cannot remove visceral fat around the organs, and it won’t tighten loose skin or repair separated muscles.
Will the fat come back after liposuction?
The fat cells removed are gone for good. If you gain weight, though, remaining fat cells in treated and untreated areas can enlarge, so maintaining a stable weight keeps results looking their best.
How do I know for sure if I’m a candidate?
An in-person consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon is the only way to know. Your surgeon will examine your skin, muscle tone and fat distribution and review your health history.
