Laser skin resurfacing is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses a laser to improve the appearance of skin by removing or reducing the signs of aging and damage. The laser is used to target the outer layers of the skin, stimulating the growth of new skin cells and collagen production. The procedure can help to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage, age spots, and uneven skin tone and texture.
A laser facial can help to reduce or eliminate the signs of aging and damage, leaving your skin looking smoother, brighter, and more youthful. And unlike some other cosmetic procedures, laser skin resurfacing typically requires minimal downtime, so you can return to your normal activities relatively quickly. With proper care, the results of laser skin resurfacing can last for several years.
At the Centre for Plastic Surgery we offer several laser skin resurfacing options. Schedule a consultation to determine your ideal laser treatment based on your current skin condition, aesthetic goals, budget and amount of downtime and recovery you are willing to experience.
For optimal results, your procedure will include other skin treatments and/or products that we'll begin a few weeks before your laser skin resurfacing. On the day of your laser skin appointment, the amount of time that the procedure requires may be variable depending on the type of laser being used. This is also true for anesthesia. In some cases, laser skin resurfacing can be conducted using only local sedation in others general anesthesia will be used. The extent of your treatment needs will be determined during your initial consultation.
After laser skin resurfacing, you’ll look and feel like you have a sunburn. What we mean by that is your face will be red and feel somewhat raw, and could be stinging or burning. You may also have some oozing or blistering and these spots will likely scab. Don’t pick at them, because scars will form if you do. After 5-7 days, your skin will peel, which is an important step in healing, revealing new, pink skin. The pinkness typically fades in the first month, but can take up to a year to completely fade. During this time we will be monitoring your progress and recommending steps for further skin care. In addition to following all post-procedure instructions, it’s very important you use the products that we suggest including SPF to protect your “new” skin, which is more vulnerable to the negative effects of sun exposure.
An ideal candidate for laser skin resurfacing is someone who is generally in good health and a nonsmoker. While this procedure is safe for most skin tones, those with extremely dark skin may experience hyperpigmentation. To reduce the chance of hyperpigmentation we may recommend using a bleaching agent along with the laser skin treatment. Additionally, laser skin resurfacing can be dangerous. You want an expert, such as those at the Centre for Plastic Surgery, to do or oversee this procedure.
